Born in a small village on the south shore of Quebec City, Mélanie and Danielle are the two youngest of five daughters. They grew up on the family land, where their parents had been running a dairy farm and a maple grove for two generations. From a very young age, they learned the trade of agriculture, their hands in the soil and their hearts firmly rooted in their heritage.
Mélanie helped her father on the farm for several years, while also touring Quebec performing music. Following the sale of the quota and the cows, she became an agricultural advisor at the hardware store in her hometown.
For her part, Danielle, with her already well-known love for wood, became a luthier, then a cabinetmaker. Even if her projects took her elsewhere, she was never far away when maple syrup season arrived, always ready to lend a hand.
Unfortunately, the tide turned when illness struck the family. Their father lost his battle with cancer in the winter of 2021. Despite their grief, their projects and passion remained strong. The two youngest children then stepped up to carry on the tradition.
It all started with a record sugaring year in 2022 for the Gagné sugar bush. Then, in 2023, Les 2 Sœurs à la Cabane was officially born, based on a simple challenge:
"You're not game... we'll do it!"
The two maple syrup producers decided to create a page to share their daily lives in video, show the ups and downs of the profession and reveal the reality of the next generation of maple syrup producers, unfiltered.
From the start, their challenge has been to bring the sugar shack up to date: complete renovation, replacement of the boiler, reverse osmosis system, and compressor, new electrical wiring, replacement of all the piping… not to mention the constant learning involved. It's a major project, but the two sisters aren't afraid of a challenge. They tackle each obstacle with determination, training, and mutual support.
They can also count on the invaluable support of their ever-present mother, as well as the backing of their uncles, neighbors, and maple syrup advisors. Every means is used to improve and grow each day in this fascinating profession.
A new chapter is now being written, with a fundraising campaign planned for 2026 and the creation of this website to begin selling their products.
It only takes a moment to discover the deep passion that Mélanie and Danielle have for maple… and the sincere desire to share it.
